I couldn't agree with you more!

love this quote

“Humans don’t thrive in a niche. Animals do.”

— Dan Koe

I didn't start here. I started on YouTube and the courses and classes I took they just kept talking about how to niche down and I was so frustrated. Like how can I just pick one thing there is a generalized theme, but to narrow it down to one thing simply became impossible.

Coming to Substack it's also stated a lot and it's something I don't agree with completely. I understand the concept of it, but I believe we can help others more by not selecting a specific niche, especially those that yes they may have a general theme but to take all of that knowledge, expertise, etc., and narrow it to one little thing it's just not beneficial to as many people.

And why not be beneficial to many people why do we have to pick a specific group to be helpful too? Great article.!

Thank you so much for sharing your insights, Kathleen! 💖

I can totally relate with these struggles. The pressure of 'niching down' just paralyzes us from taking any action. I think that by shifting our perspective from niche-finding to problem-solving, we can focus more on what truly matters: providing value to others 😊

Yes! problem solving- and then we can be a little more specific about the problem that's being solved. I really think we can help so many more people with this and like I said those that are supposed to come- will come and those who aren't- won't.

I had a similar problem of not knowing what to write.

Felt like my interests cuts across many fields..

Narrowing when starting seemed difficult, making me to procrastinate more..

One day I took my laptop, drafted a few things on my notebook and began to write.

Thank you for shading more light on this.

That's my experience too! I find that it's helpful to just start from somewhere and see where it leads me. Most of the time, I realize that there are topics that I enjoy writing about more—those would be my main focus, then my other interests can be my source of supporting ideas to offer a unique perspective ☺️ That gives me a sense of freedom to still explore my other interests and not box myself into a single niche

You follow Dan Koe? Me too. I find his videos helpful in building a more meaningful life. I'm a multidisciplinary creative so rest assured, I worry about this. I like the simplicity of your thoughts (not banal) but what if I didn't have any problems to solve? As a storyteller, what problems do I solve? This is also a part of the capitalistic society we live in, where our only value is placed upon the number of problems we can solve for people

Yes, Dan Koe is one of the creators who inspired me to start this journey :) This is one of my favorite quotes from him: "Solve your own problems and sell the solution."

I understand that it's hard to figure out what problem we solve especially when we're in the creative field, but maybe these questions can help you:

Why do you want to be a storyteller?

Why are stories important?

What are your favorite stories and why do you like them? What do they mean to you?

Go deep into psychology and basic human needs. I think this can help you start to identify problems that need stories as part of the solution 💖 Don't worry though if you don't get it all clear right away. I, too, am still figuring it out as I write and connect with my audience :)

Thank you for your advice. I'm so happy to have found you here, you're very kind. It's difficult for me to answer these questions because capitalistic society and storytelling might not belong in the same sentence. But I like what you said about stories being solutions to certain problems. The thing is, what kind of problems? I would like to talk about this but I will start with these questions :) hoping I can receive some help with them

I'm so grateful that I met you too 💖 It's okay even if you don't have all the answers yet—the important part is to just keep asking questions 😊 I don't have it all figured out either, but I find that the more I write online, the more clarity I get. I get a better understanding of myself and I also gain valuable feedback from my audience ✨ Let’s just keep sharing what we can with what we have :)

I resonate! I also believe your niche finds you. I think it's sensible to get clear on your topic and speak to the people that will resonate with that topic but I don't think you can 'find' your niche - it seems to arrive when you play with things!

I wrote about something similar for my tomorrow's newsletter “I'm good at many things but struggle in all of them”. But before posting it I’ll recommend this post to my readers there because it really helps a lot!!

Yes, exactly! We often find the answers along the journey, not before it. Just start somewhere and see where it takes you. ✨
